Agri SA welcomes resolved FMD outbreaks, resumed livestock movement in Limpopo, Eastern Cape
Industry body Agri SA has welcomed the lifting of movement restrictions on livestock in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo, saying efforts to control and eradicate foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have been successful.
The Department of Agriculture (DoA) had imposed movement restrictions on livestock in the two provinces since July last year in the Eastern Cape and since September 2022 in Limpopo, owing to outbreaks of FMD.
Following intensive efforts by veterinarians to contain the spread of the disease, including through administering more than 144 000 vaccinations, the DoA has now approved that milk from quarantined farms can be released into the local market following single pasteurisation, instead of the double pasteurisation that was required when FMD was still active in the area.
However, 76 farms in the Eastern Cape remain under quarantine until testing on these farms has confirmed the absence of viral circulation. Livestock movement restrictions also remain in place for parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The testing will start 12 months after the farms underwent vaccination. The DoA confirms a system has been put in place to assess the level of biosecurity on individual farms affected by FMD.
For Agri SA, biosecurity is a collective responsibility requiring effort and vigilance from all sectors of society.
“We commend the dedicated work of veterinary teams, organised agriculture, industry organisation and farmers. We urge all role-players in the industry and South Africans interacting with livestock to uphold biosecurity measures to protect our livestock, sustain our economy and ensure food security,” says Agri SA CEO Johann Kotze.
