Chile’s Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia (FCAB), the transport division of Antofagasta, has launched Latin America’s first hydrogen-powered locomotive.

The unveiling coincides with FCAB’s 137th anniversary and forms part of Antofagasta’s decarbonisation strategy, which targets a 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2050.

The locomotive is currently operating as a pilot project and will enable FCAB to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of hydrogen traction for freight operations. Powered by hydrogen produced from renewable sources, the locomotive incorporates a hybrid architecture combining fuel cells and batteries. It delivers 1 000 kW of power and weighs about 30 t less than a comparable diesel model.

FCAB said the technology has the potential to reduce emissions while improving operating efficiency, marking a step change in the company’s transition away from diesel-based transport.

The pilot also includes the construction of a dedicated hydrogen refuelling station at FCAB’s Patio Norte rail yard in Antofagasta.
