BHP and HBIS deepen partnership to decarbonise steel
Mining giant BHP and Chinese steel group HBIS announced on Thursday the signing of a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration on reducing carbon emissions in the global steel value chain.
Building on their initial partnership formed in 2021, the renewed agreement outlines a series of initiatives to accelerate the steel industry's transition to a low-carbon future.
The new MoU expands the scope of their joint efforts, focusing not only on improving the steel production process, but also on engaging steel end-users to reduce carbon emissions across the entire value chain. The partnership will also explore life cycle carbon reduction projects aimed at promoting industry-wide decarbonisation.
Since their first MoU in 2021, BHP and HBIS have achieved several milestones, including the successful trial of enhanced lump use in blast furnaces, the construction of a carbon capture pilot, and proof-of-concept trials at HBIS’s hydrogen metallurgy demonstration plant in ZhangXuan Tech.
These trials, which used BHP’s Pilbara iron-ore, have laid the groundwork for scaling up decarbonisation technologies in commercial operations.
Under the terms of the new agreement, the companies will focus on scaling up blast furnace abatements, optimising BHP’s iron-ore use in direct reduced iron and electric arc furnace steel production, and conducting life cycle assessments to track greenhouse-gas reductions.
The collaboration will also support industry knowledge-sharing and technical talent development, ensuring that best practices for decarbonisation are widely adopted across the steel sector.
The partnership aligns with BHP’s broader climate goals, particularly its Scope 3 emissions targets as outlined in its 2024 Climate Transition Action Plan.
