Having bought its first DAF trucks from Babcock in 2015, Bidvest International Logistics (BIL), a leading global transport and logistics company, has over the past nine years built a solid relationship with Babcock, the DAF dealer in South Africa. As a result, the company is acquiring additional DAF truck tractors to bolster its growing linehaul fleet.

BIL, a BBBEE Level 2 contributor with significant Black Ownership, provides end-to-end supply chain solutions across major industries. Established in 1910, the company has over a century of experience in optimizing supply chains.

A Trusted Partnership

One area key to optimal operations is the procurement of trucks, which is why BIL does its due diligence before any purchase. While BIL runs a multi-brand fleet, Marcus Ellappan, Overland Logistics Director, highlights the consistent performance and support from Babcock and DAF trucks over the years.

“We acquired our first DAF vehicles in 2015. Nine years later, we have continued our relationship and support for the DAF brand. Our drivers enjoy the cab space and comfortable seats that absorb vibration very well. The retarder is excellent in regulating speed on declines. Aftersales service from Babcock is excellent. Bookings for new vehicles can be done on short notice and vehicles are promptly delivered,” explains Ellappan. “We are into our new financial year and will most certainly be acquiring additional DAF truck tractors to complement our growing linehaul fleet.”

Key Factors in Choosing DAF and Babcock

Ellappan elaborates on the thorough analysis BIL conducts before acquiring new vehicles. Reliability, which ensures uptime, is paramount. “Minimal downtime ensures consistent performance. Business cannot generate revenue if the wheels are not turning,” says Ellappan.

BIL values fit-for-purpose vehicles, and simulations are critical to ensuring the right tool for the job is acquired. Other parameters such as payload capacity and fuel consumption, aligned with the company’s ESG focus, are crucial considerations.

“Another key factor in our buying decisions is the reputation of the supplier or original equipment manufacturer (OEM), which is critical. Aftersales support is of paramount importance to ensure our wheels continue turning,” says Ellappan. “In addition, strong warranties and maintenance agreements display the confidence that the OEM has in their product.”

Safety and Resale Value: Essential Benefits

Safety features are a top priority for BIL. DAF trucks come equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Advanced Emergency Braking System, Lane Departure Warning System, and improved Vehicle Stability Control. These features enhance driver and road safety, which is vital for BIL.

Resale value is another significant consideration for BIL. “Higher resale values contribute to our overall total cost of ownership. We always think about how much the truck will be worth when the time comes to trade it in for a new one. Part of the reason we opt for DAF is the resale value and Babcock’s competitive buybacks and trade-in deals,” says Ellappan.

A Robust Partnership for Success

Year 2024 marks 14 years of the Babcock and DAF Trucks partnership in South Africa. Together, Babcock and DAF offer a total transport solution through a range of professional services that enable customers to select the right vehicle, secure financing, and maintain truck fleets at peak efficiency.

With Babcock’s extensive dealer network – comprising 11 service maintenance dealers and an additional 12 breakdown service providers – customers always have a DAF professional close by to provide expert assistance throughout the lifetime of their vehicle. Highly qualified DAF technicians have in-depth knowledge of the vehicles, ensuring fast, effective repair and maintenance using original OEM parts. This guarantees maximum vehicle availability and high residual values.

In addition, the DAF driver training courses available through Babcock help drivers reduce fuel consumption, anticipate better, and increase road safety. Drivers who complete the courses are said to realize economy improvements of up to 10% and adopt a safer, more relaxed driving style.
