Bidvest International Logistics unveils custom-built automotive container yard in Rosslyn
Transport and logistics company Bidvest International Logistics (BIL) has unveiled a new custom-built 40 000 m2 Rosslyn Container Yard together with automaker BMW Group South Africa and integrated logistics company Maersk.
The facility has been purpose-built to optimise container handling for BMW Group South Africa, particularly to support the company’s production ecosystem, while offering optimised storage, movement and oversight of high-value automotive components.
BIL will be handling and storing BMW Group South Africa’s containers and supporting the logistics activities that feed directly into their production operations.
BIL says the development marks a significant investment in advanced logistics infrastructure and demonstrates the power of long-term collaboration within the automotive supply chain.
“The facility is designed to accelerate trade, support regional integration, and position the industry for lasting growth. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do, and our vision is clear: to be an economic enabler that strengthens supply chains, creates efficiencies, and opens doors for growth well beyond a single client,” BIL overland logistics director Marcus Ellappan explains.
With the container yard being located within a high-access logistics corridor, the facility will improve speed, security, and efficiency across export flows.
“A major advantage is the yard’s proximity to the BMW Rosslyn Plant. For a 24-hour operation, this significantly reduces risk and ensures tighter control over inbound and outbound movement,” says BIL supply chain solutions manager Petrus Gerber.
For Maersk, the launch underscores the strength of an established three-way partnership and its commitment to operational excellence.
“This creates value for all partners. With a relationship spanning 30 years between BMW Group South Africa, BIL and Maersk, the goal is to deliver a seamless, high-performing supply chain from end to end,” adds Maersk key client director Bent Boel.
The new Rosslyn Container Yard also expands BIL’s capacity to support additional clients beyond BMW Group South Africa, offering premium container-handling, reduced congestion, and improved turnaround times.
Its design allows for future scalability as export volumes grow and the demands on South Africa’s automotive sector continue to evolve.
“With the automotive industry remaining a key economic contributor, the launch of the yard is a meaningful step toward strengthening national logistics capability,” Ellappan notes.
Through this partnership-driven investment, BIL has reaffirmed its commitment to building a more resilient, competitive and future-ready supply chain for the country.
