South Africa’s Cabinet is planning to hold a special meeting on an ‘Economic Growth Plan’ for the country, while it will also consider additional reforms to fall under Operation Vulindlela, the joint initiative of the Presidency and National Treasury driving structural reform.

Cabinet spokesperson and Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, confirmed the proposed special meeting during the post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday, saying it would take place in the coming four weeks.

Cabinet’s usual meetings take place fortnightly on Wednesdays.

Ntshavheni also announced that for the Cabinet approved focus areas under Operation Vulindlela, outstanding work on Phase 1 in the areas of energy, water, logistics and visa reform had been completed, while new focus areas inlcuded local government, spatial inequality and digital transformation.

The additional reform focus areas Cabinet has directed Operation Vulindlela to consider include re-industrialisation and localisation, unlocking an infrastructure build programme, as well as the oil and gas sector and exploration.

South Africa has large reserves of gas and "the impeding gas cliff requires the country to build self-provisioning capacity in gas,” she said.
