Cape Town airport records 20 months of growth at international terminal
The international terminal at Cape Town International Airport has recorded its twentieth month of continuous growth.
August saw a 7% year-on-year increase in traffic, with more than 213 000 two-way international passengers travelling through the terminal.
For the first eight months of 2024, year-on-year growth reached 11%, with more than 1.97-million passengers moving through the international terminal.
The domestic terminal recorded 6% growth in August, with more than 572 000 two-way passengers processed.
Year-to-date, the domestic terminal achieved 7% growth year-on-year, with more than 4.64-million passengers moving through the terminal.
Air-cargo volumes for the Western Cape reached more than 5 000 t in June, which represents growth of 42% compared with the same month in 2023.
This strong uptick is the result of increased air transport to Cape Town, which allows for greater airplane belly capacity.
Both imports and exports performed well, with growth of 39% and 47% in June, respectively.
The top four export categories were flowers, fresh meat, fresh fruit and seafood.
The top import categories were fresh fruit, semi-conductors, clothing and fish.
For the first half of the year, air-cargo volume growth remains in double digits, with a 23% increase compared with 2023, with more than 31 250 t of goods transported.
Looking to the future, FlySafair will launch a new service between Cape Town and Windhoek, Namibia, on October 22, with two flights a week.
This will be FlySafair’s first international service out of Cape Town.
Airlink will add Gaborone, Botswana, as a new service, starting next year April, with three flights a week.
Airlink already serves Maun, in Botswana, with a daily flight.
