Industry organisation Consulting Engineers South Africa (Cesa) has several suggestions for sustainable development as South Africa plans to invest further in its infrastructure to support the country’s economic growth goals.

Speaking during Cesa’s yearly media briefing on February 12, president David Leukes welcomed the commitment made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his February 6 State of the Nation Address that the country would invest R940-billion in infrastructure over the next three years.

He emphasised, however, that proper implementation of that commitment would be essential.

Leukes outlined collaboration as essential for meaningful progress, with active participation required for collective success.

He highlighted Cesa’s role in driving change and accelerating the country’s infrastructure development.

In this vein, he called for robust cross sector collaboration. He also urged the promotion of international cooperation for best practices.

Leukes also called for continuous investment in skills development and education.

He posited that the skills and expertise of the private sector should be embraced within the public space. He also highlighted the importance of capacity building in the public sector.

Leukes said professionalising the public sector would engender efficient processes, cost savings and enhanced quality of work.

He called for support of artisan development, with the country aiming to produce 30 000 qualified artisans a year by 2030.

Leukes also mentioned the importance of investing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, as well as pursuing mentorship programmes to foster talent and growth.

He also highlighted the need to ensure community engagement and social impact.

Leukes averred that innovation would be pivotal to driving sustainable solutions, with collaboration providing a platform for this to thrive.

He called for the implementation of smart infrastructure solutions.

Leukes also mentioned the importance of ethical leadership at all levels. He said this was crucial to achieving sustainable development.

He emphasised that transparent procurement processes would prevent corruption and enhance fairness. He highlighted a solid regulatory framework as pivotal for successful infrastructure projects.

Leukes also underlined the importance of institutional oversight in public procurement.

The importance of maintenance was also emphasised.
