Chery South Africa has confirmed the upcoming global introduction of a double-cab bakkie, marking the brand’s entry into this highly competitive segment.

Known internally as the KP31, the new model is scheduled to arrive late this year or early next year.

It will debut with a diesel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrain that combines a 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine with electric drive technology.

The vehicle will be underpinned by Chery’s Kaitan ladder-frame chassis, a new-generation platform developed to support internal combustion, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains.

The Chinese car maker says the KP31 will target a payload of 1 000 kg and a braked towing capacity of up to 3 500 kg.

The production-ready model will feature front, centre and rear locking differentials, a low-range gearbox and dedicated off-road driving modes.

A tight-turn assist function has also been previewed, designed to enhance manoeuvrability in demanding terrain.

Additional functional elements include underbody protection, integrated recovery points and a raised air intake.

Following the introduction of the diesel PHEV derivative, Chery plans to expand the range with a petrol-powered PHEV variant.

“The KP31 marks an important step in Chery’s global product expansion strategy,” says Chery South Africa national marketing manager Verene Petersen.

“The pick-up segment is a core category in many markets, and this model has been developed to meet the high standards customers expect in terms of durability, versatility and capability.”
