Petra Diamonds’ Cullinan diamond mine (CDM) has successfully launched its Gumboot Recycling project, aimed at reducing plastic waste while supporting education through its Schools’ Support programme.

This initiative, led by CDM’s Health, Safety, Environmental and Social Performance departments, transforms used gumboots into durable school shoes.

The first batch of repurposed shoes was officially handed over on September 20, which the company says marks a significant step toward sustainability and community support.

The company highlights that responsible mining is central to CDM, with a strong focus on minimising environmental impact through responsible waste management.

As part of this commitment, CDM employees contributed to this initiative by donating their used gumboots, which were cleaned, reprocessed and transformed into eco-friendly school shoes.

A total of 940 kg of gumboots was recycled, coupled with additional financial support from CDM, allowing 100 pairs of shoes to be donated to learners at the Leeuwfontein Primary Farm School, Region 5 – the first beneficiaries of the project.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to sustainability and community upliftment. By turning waste into opportunity, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also provide tangible support to the learners in our communities.

“This project is a testament to our purpose of creating abundance from rarity,” says Petra Diamonds CEO Richard Duffy.
