DOSE OF REALITY: South Africa’s sluggish approach to the procurement of the Covid-19 vaccine is deplorable, but is also only part of the problem. The beggar-thy-neighbour scramble adopted by rich countries serves as a bitter dose of reality about the importance (or lack thereof) the international community attaches to the issue of equity. Ironically, it is also not the best way to protect their citizens, as leaving the vast majority of the world’s population without access would do very little to stem the tide of the pandemic.
