A project management office (PMO) has been established to support the implementation of the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (Sarem) – the country’s industrialisation strategy for the renewable energy and battery storage value chains approved in 2025.

The PMO will be based at the Independent Power Producers Office, in Centurion, Pretoria.

Electricity and Energy Deputy Minister Samantha Graham-Maré confirmed the establishment of the structure in a statement following a meeting of Sarem’s executive oversight committee.

“The PMO must now ensure that the plan is executed, so that we can accurately respond to the needs of the sector,” Graham-Maré said.

Through the Sarem, the objective is to drive green industrial development by building renewable energy and storage value chains, supporting localisation, galvanising domestic demand, facilitating technology transfer and skills development, and supporting enterprise development and transformation.

Graham-Maré indicated the aim was to create 25 000 jobs in the renewabl-energy sector by 2030.

“I extend my gratitude to our international partner, the European Union, which has undertaken to provide technical assistance should the PMO require it,” she added.
