PPE innovations showcased at Electra Mining 2024
ANETTE THOMPSON Sisi’s designs address women’s unique anatomical differences to support better posture and reduce both risk and musculoskeletal issues
Manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed for women, Sisi Safety Wear, showcased its innovative range of women’s PPE at Electra Mining Africa 2024, spotlighting its female-fitted safety footwear.
The company specialises in high-quality safety footwear and workwear designed specifically for women, placing an emphasis on inclusivity, comfort and protection.
Sisi Safety Wear’s participation at Electra Mining was aimed at driving awareness about the critical importance of tailored female PPE in sectors such as mining, automation, manufacturing, power and transport.
Sisi Safety Wear brand manager Desiree Hlubi commented that the company is committed to improving safety wear by focusing on the unique needs of female workers.
Hlubi added that “it is not just about meeting the safety requirements; it’s about ensuring comfort and well-being, which ultimately boosts productivity, health and morale”.
While Sisi Safety Wear had showcased its existing women’s PPE offerings, it is also noted that it was preparing to launch new styles. The designs are in the concept phase and promise to further address the needs of women in demanding environments.
A highlight of Sisi Safety Wear’s presence at Electra Mining was its sponsorship of the Women in Mining Workshop on September 3, 2024, which was hosted by Women in Mining South Africa.
The workshop focused on empowering women in mining to drive inclusive growth, innovation and decent work, aligning with the eighth UN Sustainable Development Goal, namely, ‘promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all’.
“We are proud to be part of such a pivotal event that not only highlights the achievements of women in the industry but also encourages further advancements and inclusivity,” Hlubi added.
Sisi Safety Wear specialist podiatrist Dr Anette Thompson highlighted the critical importance of female-fitted safety footwear at the Women in Mining Workshop.
Thompson explained that properly fitted safety boots are essential, not only for the prevention of immediate workplace accidents, but also for ensuring long-term foot health and overall well-being.
“Ill-fitting gear can lead to discomfort, fatigue and even injury. At Sisi, our designs address [. . .] unique anatomical differences to support better posture, reduce risk and musculoskeletal issues, and enhance overall comfort and energy efficiency,” she elaborated.
The company notes that Thompson’s role as the consulting podiatrist for Sisi Safety Wear is instrumental in the brand’s development of female safety footwear.
It commented that it is her expertise that ensures the footwear not only adheres to safety standards, but that it also provides optimal comfort and support, which is crucial for demanding work environments.
