Volkswagen has revealed its newest concept vehicle – the ID.2all – with the production version set to be unveiled in 2025.

The German car maker promises that the production version of the electric ID.2all, to be based on its new modular electric drive entry platform, will be “as spacious as a Golf and as inexpensive as a Polo”.

The current range of electric vehicles (EVs) on sale in South Africa are premium vehicles, with the cheapest vehicle starting at around R750 000.

In contrast to this, Volkswagen promises a vehicle with a starting price of 25 000 euros in 2025, or just under R500 000.

Of course, this is the price tag before the South African government is likely to add its range of special taxes on vehicles, and on EVs in particular, should the vehicle be imported.

Also of interest is that Volkswagen Group South Africa currently produces the Polo for the local and European markets, with the long-term future of this model facing some serious scrutiny as Europe continues to migrate to zero-emission vehicles.

The ID.2all concept unveiled by Volkswagen is a front-wheel-drive vehicle, with a range of up to 450 km.

“We are transforming the company rapidly and fundamentally – with the clear objective of making Volkswagen a genuine Love Brand,” says Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO Thomas Schäfer.

“The ID.2all shows where we want to take the brand. We want to be close to the customer and offer top technology in combination with fantastic design.

“We are implementing the transformation at pace to bring electric mobility to the masses.”

The ID.2all then also provides a preview of Volkswagen’s new design language, which is based on the three pillars of stability, likeability and enthusiasm.

The vehicle is one of ten new electric models that Volkswagen will launch by 2026.

This year alone will see the introduction of the new ID.32, the ID. Buzz with long wheelbase, and the ID.74.

This will be followed by a compact electric sports-utility vehicle in 2026.

Volkswagen says it is also working on an electric car at a price of less than 20 000 euros.
