GREEN HYDROGEN

Danish company Orsted, which is one of the world’s biggest developers of offshore wind farms, is confident that it massive turbines could be key to the production of greener hydrogen. Currently, most hydrogen is derived from natural gas and causes greenhouse gas emissions. However, using a combination of renewable energy, water and electrolysis, hydrogen can be produced in the absence of emissions. Bloomberg reports that, by 2025, Orsted will move beyond studies and have electrolyser projects up and running, including a 30 MW project in Germany. Given South Africa’s wind and solar resource base, the production of green hydrogen could be cheaper here than in most other countries globally. Photograph: Bloomberg
