Name of the Project
Green hydrogen project.

Location
Near Walvis Bay, in Namibia.

Project Owner/s
Namibian Ports Authority and Cie Maritime Belge (CMB).

Project Description
The project is expected to be Namibia’s first operating green hydrogen plant. It is part of a plan by the country to exploit some of the world’s best solar radiation and to tap into Europe’s demand for green fuels.

The facility will initially produce 400 kg/d of hydrogen, powered by a 5 MW solar plant. When complete, the project will enable CMB to venture into refuelling large ships that dock in Walvis Bay, which is situated on the route around the tip of Africa.

The CMB plant, which will be expanded, will be followed by an ammonia terminal at Walvis Bay port. CMB is also planning to build a 250 000 t/y ammonia plant, powered by solar at Arandis, in the heart of the Namib desert.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The hydrogen plant is expected to cost $30-million to build. About $3.5-billion is expected to be spent on the projects.

Planned Start/End Date
Production is expected to start in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The entire facility will take three years to complete.
