The City of Johannesburg Environment & Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), through its Waste Management & Regulation Unit, secured first prize for its biogas project, as well as $10 000 and technical support for implementation of the project, at sustainable cities network organisation C40’s Summit in Lagos, Nigeria.

The project forms part of the city’s Alternative Waste Treatment Technology initiative, which is aimed at tackling pressing waste management challenges. The initiative aims to reduce organic waste in landfills, lower methane emissions and mitigate climate change.

The project aims to redirect organic waste from landfills to curb environmental pollution, produce renewable biogas to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and create value-added products, such as digestate, for agricultural use.

This award underscores the city’s commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental resilience, it says.

“We are proud of the city’s efforts to explore alternative waste reduction strategies and address the challenges posed by our landfills, which are under immense pressure owing to limited airspace,” says CoJ EISD executive director Tebogo Modiba.

“Effective waste management is central to creating a sustainable and liveable city. This initiative aims to reduce waste generation and disposal while minimising environmental degradation.”

As urban populations grow and waste disposal concerns escalate, initiatives such as the biogas project will be critical in shaping a greener, more sustainable future, he adds.
