The Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce (JCCI) has appointed Caren Sutherns as its new president, following a successful AGM held on June 25.

Sutherns takes over the leadership from Connie Mashaba, who served as president with distinction, driving key initiatives to support local businesses and strengthen Johannesburg’s economic growth.

The chamber says it extends its deepest gratitude to Mashaba for her dedication and impactful tenure.

With over 30 years of legal experience in the residential and development sector and an active advocate for collaborative solutions between developers and government, the JCCI says Sutherns brings a wealth of expertise and a dynamic vision to the role.

Additionally, she has been an active member of the chamber as a VP contributing to policy discussions and championing property sector projects and forums, including the newly formed Presidential Working Group for the Johannesburg City regeneration commissioned by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In her acceptance speech, Sutherns emphasised her commitment to fostering innovation, enhancing member value and collaborating with stakeholders to address pressing challenges facing Johannesburg’s business community.

"I am honoured to lead the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce at such a pivotal time. Together with our members, we will work to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, promote inclusive growth, and position Johannesburg as a hub of opportunity and competitiveness,” she said.

JCCI CEO Bernadette Zeiler and the JCCI board also welcomed newly elected VPs and honorary treasurer Lunga Mani, Paula Franco and Aurelio Grech-Cumbo and reaffirmed its focus on key priorities, including small- and medium-sized enterprise development, digital transformation, regeneration of the city and sustainable economic practices.
