Name of the Project
Kristinestad e-methanol plant.

Location
Kristinestad, Ostrobothnia, Finland.

Project Owner/s
Koppö Energia Oy, a joint venture between funds managed by Prime Capital AG (Germany) and CPC Finland, a subsidiary of CPC Germania.

Project Description
The project involves the development of a large-scale e-methanol plant.

The facility will have a planned capacity of 450 t/d of e-methanol in various grades, aimed at supplying the maritime sector and the e-gasoline fuel market. Unlike conventional grey methanol, which is produced from natural gas, e-methanol is manufactured by hydrogenating captured CO2 with green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen will be generated by a 200 MW water electrolysis plant powered by renewable energy.

The CO2 feedstock will be captured at a waste incineration facility in Vaasa, liquefied, and transported by truck to Kristinestad for conversion.

The plant will demonstrate the integration of carbon capture and renewable hydrogen technologies into a sustainable fuel production chain. E-methanol from the facility is expected to significantly reduce life-cycle emissions, compared with fossil-based alternatives, thereby supporting decarbonisation efforts in the transport sector.
