The State-owned Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) is inviting bids for the supply, installation and maintenance of its information and communication technology infrastructure.

Bidding companies must have a minimum of three years’ experience in providing similar services.

Bid documents in English are obtainable on payment of a nonrefundable fee of $50, or its equivalent in a freely convertible currency. Bids must be accompanied by a bid security of $200. The bid submission deadline is March 31.

Meanwhile, the Malawi government has unbundled Escom, with the process resulting in the creation of a new parastatal, Electricity Generation Company, which will be responsible for power generation, while Escom has retained the power transmission and distribution functions.

The unbundling process was undertaken as part of the Power Sector Reform Programme, which Malawi is implementing using the proceeds of a $350-million compact grant from the US’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Malawi is also using part of the MCC grant to rehabilitate its ageing power stations on the Shire river, which account for 99% of the country’s power generation.

Malawi is also upgrading the capacity of some substations and power transmission lines in readiness for the importation of power from Mozambique by means of the World Bank-financed Mozambique–Malawi interconnector.
