Africa-focused mining and development company Marula Mining is finalising negotiations with a Chinese battery manufacturer and its current lithium offtake partner, for the establishment of a new joint venture (JV) partnership at the Blesberg lithium and tantalum mine, in South Africa's Northern Cape.

The JV will seek to commission, finance and operate a lithium acid leaching plant to produce an intermediate lithium product for use in the manufacture of lithium batteries and other high-value lithium products.

Marula says the negotiations between the JV partners have been ongoing for the past several months and that extensive testwork has been undertaken in China on material produced from Blesberg.

Detailed engineering and process design work has also been completed, along with detailed operating and capital cost reviews and economic analyses for the operation of a lithium acid leaching processing plant.

Marula expects the JV documentation to be formally completed in the fourth quarter, with the plant anticipated to be commissioned in the first half of 2025 and sales of a high-value lithium sulphate to follow.

The plant is expected to produce 2 000 t/y of a high-grade and high-value lithium product.
