Telecommunications group MTN South Africa is sponsoring a microgrid initiative in Orange Farm to bring renewable energy, Internet connectivity and new economic opportunities to the area.

MTN’s sponsorship will see the microgrid solution being implemented in partnership with non-profit company Ukukubona, connecting 96 homes and switching on the lights for the first time, with locally sourced materials used for the project.

With over 70 000 households in Orange Farm, access to affordable and reliable electricity has been a persistent challenge.

This initiative tackles energy poverty while integrating Internet access, enabling digital inclusion and financial empowerment.

“This initiative goes beyond providing renewable energy and connectivity – it is about empowering people to take ownership of their future. Through this microgrid solution, we are addressing multiple challenges at once: unemployment, poverty and inequality,” said MTN South Africa sustainability and broad-based black economic empowerment GM Keabetswe Mabe.

The renewable-energy solution will provide reliable electricity at costs tailored for low-income households, while enabling residents to gain access to affordable Internet connectivity to access critical online resources for education, healthcare and business.

In addition, community members will gain opportunities to earn income through the reselling of electricity and WiFi tokens, creating sustainable microenterprises.

“This multi-faceted intervention will also see new opportunities for learning and growth brought to the Orange Farm community. With connectivity, youth can now access essential career guidance tools allowing them to navigate their career paths and access online digital skills courses for free through the MTN Foundation’s Skills Academy,” said Mabe.

The infrastructure will be remotely monitored, ensuring efficient operations and swift maintenance, while local residents will receive training to maintain the infrastructure, equipping them with technical skills and ensuring the project’s long-term sustainability.

By harnessing renewable energy, the initiative reduces reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to environmental preservation while addressing the urgent needs of underserved communities.

“Our purpose is to establish a framework for collaboration with corporates like MTN and our implementation partner Lokal, to bring product and services to the community to provide better living conditions, and help the community build a sustainable economy,” added Ukukubona MD Antoinette Roberts.

“With this project we will provide guidance and support to communities in establishing and managing sustainable businesses.”

The model of this project fosters community ownership and ensures the infrastructure’s sustainability.
