MTN’s Chenosis continues to empower innovators across Africa

Cross-industry application programming interface (API) marketplace and accelerator platform Chenosis, launched by MTN Group, continues to transform Africa's technology landscape, as it provides developers with efficient new ways to create and scale applications.

Chenosis' broad range of APIs, including natural language processing (NLP) and translation-oriented offerings, addresses one of African technology’s most persistent challenges: overcoming language barriers.

“In a continent with thousands of languages and dialects, these APIs are critical enablers for developers creating applications that can truly connect with Africans in their home languages across a vast range of use cases,” said Chenosis head of products and platforms Waseem Amra.

Its tools can be creatively stacked and combined, much like Lego blocks, to build software and Web-based solutions across use-cases like secure payment systems, embedded insurance, telecommunications services, data analytics tools, identification and know-your-customer, or KYC, services, translation, sentiment analysis, as well as AI and machine learning.

“Our goal is to make technology accessible to every person in Africa. We want to allow people to experience the benefits, speed, power and convenience of digital technology, whether it is in banking and finance, healthcare, customer service or any other sector.”

The impact of Chenosis' API ecosystem and the capabilities it engenders are already evident, Amra pointed out, highlighting local technology startup Botlhale, which leveraged the marketplace to launch its multilingual translation API, which currently supports IsiZulu, Sesotho and Afrikaans, with more languages in development.

This API is now integrated into MultiChoice’s customer service systems, including its WhatsApp chatbot and call centre technology, and allows users to receive support in their own language, leading to increased customer engagement and retention.

“The partnership exemplifies the potential of API ecosystems in the African context. It is a great case study, demonstrating how Chenosis helps startups develop and integrate complex technologies and tailored solutions into large-scale operations.

“As Chenosis continues to expand its offerings, the future looks bright for African technology innovation. The platform is not just providing tools; it's nurturing a new generation of developers who can craft bespoke solutions for Africa’s unique local markets,” Amra commented.

Chenosis invites Africa’s digital tinkerers, app developers, technology entrepreneurs and API enthusiasts to explore the growing array of offerings available on the API marketplace.

“Whether you are looking to scale rapidly and reach new markets, or you are an established company aiming to better service your existing client base, Chenosis provides the tools to turn your vision into reality. The possibilities are immense.”
