Natural gas infrastructure development, Ghana
Name and Location
Natural gas infrastructure development, Ghana.
Project Description
The project involves the development of efficient and viable infrastructure required for the commercialisation of Ghana’s gas discoveries.
The objective is to develop the gas resources initially for the domestic market, mainly for power generation, fertiliser production and the petrochemicals industry. A gas pipeline will link the offshore production site to a new processing plant in the Western region of Bonwire as part of efforts to boost the country’s energy supplies.
Gas production in the country is expected to stabilise at around 120-million cubic feet a day. Most of the gas will fuel the gas-fired power plant at Aboadze, but the country aims to export gas in the future. According to an agreement between the government and exploration companies, Ghana will receive all of the first 200-billion cubic feet of gas, after which the State will only receive its share.
Value
The project is valued at $800-million.
Duration
The project will take 18 to 20 months to complete and first gas is expected by the end of 2012 or early 2013.
