The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) registered 181 generation facilities during the second quarter (July to September) of the 2025/26 financial year.

These facilities boast a total capacity of 1 401 MW and an estimated investment value of R30.78-billion, Nersa points out in a statement.

The generation facilities comprise 175 solar PV, four wind, one biogas and one battery energy storage system facilities. Gauteng boasts the majority of the solar PV facilities, at 66.

Gauteng, the Western Cape and Limpopo are the three provinces with the highest number of new registered generation facilities.

However, the top three provinces in terms of total installed capacity and investment cost are the Western Cape, the Northern Cape and Limpopo. In the second quarter, the Western Cape generated the highest investment cost at R20.77-billion, with an installed capacity of 872 MW.

Of the 181 registered facilities, 93 are connected to municipal distribution networks, with a total capacity of 75.12 MW and an investment cost of R1.19-billion.

The remaining 88 are connected to State-owned utility Eskom’s grid, with a total capacity of 1 325.77 MW and an investment cost of R29.59-billion.

For the second quarter of 2025/26, the average investment cost is R21 970/kW.

The processing of applications for the registration of the 181 generation facilities was done within an average turnaround time of ten working day. This is an improvement from the previous financial year’s (2024/25) second quarter, during which 149 applications for registration were processed in 12 working days, the regulator informs.

“This illustrates Nersa’s commitment to the efficient evaluation and processing of generation facilities’ registration applications,” it avers.

Since the inception of the registration regime in 2018, Nersa says it has registered 2 236 generation facilities, with a total capacity of 16040 MW and a total investment cost of R328-billion.
