New book from AFC founder aims to centre African perspective in climate development
A new book, Navigating Africa’s Climate Development Nexus, written by African Climate Foundation (ACF) founder Saliem Fakir, offers a perspective centering on African agency, pragmatism and long-term vision in confronting the climate crisis, with global conversations often sidelining the realities of the Global South.
While conventional climate literature often separates environmental and economic priorities, Fakir’s book aims to brings them together through an African lens.
A curated collection of essays — updated from their original appearances in other publications — the volume highlights the strategic and on-the-ground thinking that led to the establishment of the ACF.
Fakir is executive director of the AFC, which is an African-led strategic re-granter working at the intersection of climate and development. He is also a columnist for Engineering News.
“Saliem’s book is a testament to his talent and commitment. He has an incredible ability to make complex ideas accessible and engaging. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to read this book,” says Presidency of South Africa project management office head Rudi Dicks.
With the continent navigating rising climate risks, rapid urbanisation and infrastructure deficits, the book aims to addresses a central challenge of ensuring that economic growth and development do not come at the expense of environmental stability.
From the Just Energy Transition Partnership in South Africa to emerging investment platforms, the book draws on real-time policy and investment developments to frame an African-led climate and development model that is practical, scalable and politically aware.
With themes ranging from economic diversification to geopolitical alignment, the essays are both reflective and action oriented. Together, they aim to build a forward-looking agenda for African climate leadership, which emphasises solutions shaped by African voices and realities.
The book is available to buy at selected bookstores and online through the Amazon Kindle Store.
