Nissan to close seven out of 17 plants, not known if SA site will be affected
Nissan said this week that it will close seven plants out of a global network of 17 manufacturing sites, with 20 000 jobs on the line.
It is not clear if the South Africa operation will be affected.
The struggling Japanese car maker reported a net loss of $4.5-billion for the year that ended in March, amid surging restructuring costs and the fallout of President Donald Trump’s trade war.
The company will close the manufacturing facilities by the 2027 fiscal year.
Nissan produces the Navara one-ton bakkie in South Africa for the local market, with limited exports, mostly to wider Africa.
Production fell to around 17 000 units last year as the Rosslyn-based facility had to end NP200 half-ton bakkie production.
Production has been hovering short of 25 000 units a year for the last few years.
A spokesperson for Nissan South Africa says its parent company is “currently conducting a detailed internal assessment regarding the announced plant closures. Unfortunately, at this stage, we are not able to inform you which plants will be affected”.
