October new-vehicle sales at decade high
South Africa’s new car and truck market notched up another stellar month in October as it recorded the highest monthly sales – 55 956 units – since March, 2015.
Naamsa | The Automotive Business Council says demand was boosted by easing inflation, a firmer rand, improving consumer sentiment and demand recovery in key export markets.
October new-vehicle sales were up 16% compared with the same month last year.
For the year to date, the new-vehicle market was 15.7% ahead of the same period last year.
New-passenger-car sales reached 39 610 units last month, up 14.8% on October 2024.
Sales to the car-rental sector accounted for 21.7% of new-passenger-car sales.
October sales of bakkies, small trucks, vans and minibuses reached 13 361 units – up 23.9%.
Medium truck sales were up 9.3%, to 809 units, while heavy truck and bus sales spoiled the party somewhat with a 1% decline, to 2 176 units.
New-vehicle exports inched up 0.5% in October, to 32 659 units.
For the year-to-date, export volumes were 6.7% ahead of 2024 levels.
