The Port of Durban has achieved a major milestone with the successful handling of a 399.99-m vessel, demonstrating the port’s ability to handle large vessels aligned with global shipping trends.

Boasting a capacity of 19 437 twenty-foot equivalent units, the MSC Rifaya is largest container ship to dock at the port to date.

The vessel made an unscheduled call to conduct emergency repairs, serving as an opportunity to demonstrate the port’s capabilities and infrastructure to accommodate large vessels and solidifying its position as a major player in the global maritime industry, says port authority Transnet National Ports Authority.

The arrival of MSC Rifaya was facilitated by a highly coordinated four-tug operation, requiring meticulous planning and precise execution. The complex manoeuvre demonstrated the port’s advanced maritime capabilities and highlighted the skill and expertise of the port’s marine team.

“The successful handling of this massive vessel is a testament to the Port of Durban's world-class infrastructure and expertise, and we are proud to have a team of skilled and dedicated professionals who can handle the most complex maritime operations,” says acting port manager Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi.
