President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for new public nominations for members of the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC).

The PCC, as a multi-stakeholder advisory body, facilitates social dialogue to provide advice on South Africa’s response to climate change, as well as development pathways that can ensure a just transition to a lower-emissions and climate-resilient economy.

The commission typically makes recommendations to government based on the best available science and inputs from public participation processes.

The current commissioners’ term ends on December 31.

The commissioners are National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa president Mac Chavalala, World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa just transition leader Louise Naudé, Earthlife Africa director Makoma Lekalakala, Agri SA Natural Resource Centre of Excellence head Janse Rabie, Eskom chairperson Mteto Nyati and Water Research Commission executive manager Shafick Adams.

New commissioners will be appointed for the next five-year term. Ramaphosa calls for nominations for persons with relevant experience in climate change, environmental policy, sustainable development, economic development, energy or social justice, who can represent the interests of society.

Submissions can be made until August 29.
