Rand Water, Eskom restore power to Palmiet
While power supply has been restored to water utility Rand Water’s Palmiet booster pumping station, some areas supplied by the utility’s impacted reservoirs are likely to experience low water pressure and or shortages for a few days.
A power failure at the Palmiet station occurred in the early hours of November 6, impacting water supply at several of Rand Water’s reservoirs, including Klipriviersberg; Klipfontein; Haartebeeshoek; Brakfontein; Germiston; Northridge; and Airfield.
A joint investigation by Rand Water and power utility Eskom found that Eskom’s infrastructure was operating normally, but rather, the water utility found that arcing had occurred on a breaker and, as a result, it could only pump about 80% of the load.
“The two teams collaborated to quickly address the issue and power was restored by 03h50. Palmiet booster station started operating at 85% capacity when power was restored while repairs on the incomer breaker were underway,” the parties said in a joint statement issued on Thursday.
The incomer breaker was repaired, and Palmiet booster station started operating at full capacity from 19h45 on November 6.
