A campaign aimed at teaching school children about the importance of recycling is challenging learners to collect and sort as much recyclable waste as possible.

The initiative, led by South Africa's industry body for metal packaging, Metpac-SA, in collaboration with the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP), has a nationwide reach with a specific focus on primary school learners in disadvantaged communities.

GTP will work with 20 primary schools across the Western Cape to run a competition whereby learners are awarded with treats for collecting cans, while their schools compete for a share of R30 000 in prize money to fund school upgrades.

GTP project manager Monique Muller emphasised the importance of the initiative: "Trash 4 Treats is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared vision. We are not just teaching kids about recycling; we are showing them how small actions can have a big impact. The ripple effects of this programme extend far beyond the classroom, as learners take these lessons home to their families, spreading the message of environmental responsibility even further. With the support of partners like Metpac-SA, we are creating opportunities for schools to thrive while contributing to a cleaner, greener community."

The campaign hopes to drive meaningful change for learners, schools, and the environment by instilling lifelong habits in young learners, fostering pride in their communities, and providing schools with resources to create better learning environments.

Since its launch in 2019, the initiative has expanded its reach from the original ten schools to a total of 65 schools nationwide. Metpac-SA's sponsorship provides for resources such as bulk bags and recycling bins, while also handling the collection and weighing of collected recyclables.

Communities can nominate schools to participate in the programme or schools can apply directly to participate.
