Restoring compromised infrastructure after cyberattacks

Cyber resilience and data protection solutions provider Commvault have extended the announced capabilities of its advanced Cleanroom Recovery technology. The advancements are designed to further reduce the risk of restoring compromised infrastructure and optimise end-to-end recovery following cyberattacks.

According to Commvault, it is not only data that must be recovered after a cyberattack but also the infrastructure – databases, applications, and operating systems – that power and run the data, all of which can be very time-consuming. The company can accelerate the infrastructure recovery process by bringing what it calls a ‘Factory Reset’ to its Cleanroom Recovery technology.

Factory Reset allows companies to rapidly restore their infrastructure within a cleanroom, using a pre-defined, validated, clean image, and, unlike traditional resets, offers a customisable recovery point-in-time. This advancement, which is also referred to as ‘pave/repave’, ensures that restored infrastructure is not tainted by ransomware, as the image is hardened and verified in advance. In addition, once the infrastructure is restored, organisations can rehydrate those systems with data, helping to speed up the overall recovery process. Factory Reset also allows administrators to focus on validating recovered data in the cleanroom.

“Commvault Cleanroom Recovery isn't just about having an isolated environment; it delivers tangible results that impact the business. Previously, recovery could take more than seven hours, causing significant disruption. Today, our Cleanroom environment ensures zero wait time for most applications—services are ready instantly,” said Chart Industries IT global infrastructure and operations director Nate Hauenstein. “Reducing that downtime so dramatically is critical – it minimizes disruption, protects revenue, and proves the value of investing in advanced, validated recovery solutions like Commvault.”

Commvault says it is not only focused on recovering clean infrastructure but also clean data after a cyberattack. Its Cloud Threat Scan allows organisations to scan recovered data in a cleanroom to ensure that data is clean, and can help enterprises remain in a state of continuous business after a strike.

Commvault is now extending its Cleanroom Recovery technology to managed service providers (MSPs) enabling MSPs to offer the technology to their customers.

“With these new capabilities, Commvault is delivering a controlled environment with increased accessibility and choice, real-time threat detection that helps minimize the risk of reinfection, and a recovery process that’s as efficient and reliable as possible,” says Databarracks MD James Watts.

“The integration of Factory Reset and Threat Scan into Cleanroom [will] enable us to provide a more robust and comprehensive service, helping us ensure that our clients' infrastructures are not only restored but also free from any malicious elements,” added Verinext senior VP: managed services Matt Bynum.

The advancements in Cleanroom Recovery technology build on previous capabilities designed to advance resilience, allowing organisations to rapidly and regularly test and, if necessary, retest their cyber recovery plans across their IT infrastructure.

In addition, AI-enabled Cleanpoint Validation automatically empowers customers to rapidly identify the last clean recovery point. Cleanroom Recovery also allows users to customise recovery sequences, so data is recovered in a logical order.
