A critical issue facing manufacturers of powders and bulk solid materials globally is the need for a safe, reliable and efficient packaging and transport system, says manufacturer of pallet-free bulk bag systems Tellap director Ken Mouritzen.

He points out that packaging must protect product purity, which is why it is important in the handling of powders and bulk solids that waste is minimised and the highest level of product safety of goods being transported is maintained.

Mouritzen explains that wooden pallets are a problem in terms of not only purchase, storage, exchange and disposal costs, but also other issues, like International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 15 compliance, damage and product contamination, which also increase expenses.

“These costs, along with transportation charges and frenetic global competition, have impacted significantly on companies’ profit margins,” he says.

Mouritzen explains that the Tellap system is a patented lightweight recyclable pallet-free bulk bag that has been developed in response to demand for a replacement for the conventional heavy wooden pallet. The Tellap system maximises product weight and volume transported, minimises product damage and reduces transport and shipping costs.

Removing pallets from operations and logistics increases efficiency and offers savings, including faster load and unload and the transport of more product at no additional cost. He says the cost-effective, safe, efficient and recyclable Tellap system, comprises a customisable polypropylene bulk bag with two lightweight robust plastic sleeves.

“The high-strength sleeves are integrated into the base of the bag to become the pallet, allowing a forklift to raise the bag from the base. No external pallet is needed,” Mouritzen points out.

Safety Savings

Mouritzen explains that, to be able to establish transport savings when replacing pallets with Tellap, an online calculator is now available on the company’s website. Safety has been an important focus in the development of Tellap.

He notes that the integrated sleeves, which act like outriggers on a canoe, increase stability during storage and transport, making the workplace safer for workers. The bags are safe and stable when stacked on top of one another, where permissible in terms of legislation, using limited space and reducing warehouse costs.

“The Tellap bag design is tailored to meet the needs of each customer, the product, filling, conveying and discharge equipment, as well as the mode of transport. Carefully selected global manufacturers are rigorously tested and comply with mandatory industry regulations to ensure every bag supplied meets stringent international standards,” Mouritzen explains.

He points out that Tellap has received independent certification from global specialist in packaging component testing TEN-E Packaging Services, which ensures every customer of Tellap receives a consistent high-quality product, optimised for specific packaging needs.

Mouritzen explains that the Tellap pallet-free bag is environmentally sustainable and is manufactured from 100% recyclable polypropylene, requiring no timber or heat treatment and has no disposal problems. As a result, sustainability, cost reduction and safety are key reasons organisations now use this packaging system.

“Tellap recently won a prestigious product award in the Green Supply Chain Awards. Tellap is suitable for packing and transporting dry, loose and bulk products, . . . including food commodities and ingredients – like cereals and nuts – as well as chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and minerals,” he concludes.
