The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has highlighted that it is a proud partner with its US counterpart, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), in the Nasa Space Apps Challenge, which will take place on October 4 and 5. This event is the biggest global hackathon and it will coincide with World Space Week.

The aim of the Nasa Space Apps Challenge is to inspire young people to try and solve both space and Earth challenges using space-based data. That data will be supplied by space agencies around the world.

For this year, 18 challenges have been designated. These range from using AI to hunt for exoplanets, to developing a visual tool to map worldwide flowering phenology (that is, the study of cyclic and seasonal natural phenomena). The challenges cover a number of levels of difficulty, to open the event to as wide a range of participants as possible.

South Africa will host two in-person hackathon events. One will be in Pretoria, hosted by the University of Pretoria. The other will be in Cape Town, hosted by the University of the Western Cape’s Future-Innovation Lab. People unable to attend these events in person will be able to participate remotely, via Zoom.

Teams participating in the hackathon will be assisted with mentors and resources.
