SA’s cheapest electric-car maker to roll out local charging network
Build Your Dreams Auto South Africa (BYD SA) has announced that will install between 200 and 300 public charging stations across the country in 2026, in a move to make electric mobility more accessible nationwide.
BYD executive VP Stella Li regards the rollout as a strategic investment in South Africa, labelling the country as a pivotal market and a future springboard for regional growth.
She has also announced the brand’s plans to roll out ultrafast 1 MW charging technology infrastructure, paving the way for rapid charging once compatible BYD models reach the market.
The company says the goal is to build a comprehensive ecosystem that supports the adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), encompassing not only electric cars, but also battery technology, renewable-energy generation and storage solutions.
“BYD's presence in South Africa represents our commitment to being more than an automotive brand – we are a technology company delivering comprehensive new energy solutions for this market,” confirms BYD SA marketing director Nomonde Kweyi.
“From our range of NEVs, including pure electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids, to batteries, renewable-energy generation and storage systems, we are building the integrated ecosystem that South Africa needs for its sustainable future.”
The Chinese brand says it is also engaging with power utility Eskom and other government entities to explore collaboration opportunities that could strengthen South Africa’s EV infrastructure, including grid readiness and sustainable energy integration for charging networks.
These partnerships form part of BYD’s strategy to ensure that electric mobility is practical and achievable for local drivers.
BYD SA has already opened the door to much more affordable EV motoring, with the Dolphin Surf’s starting price set at R339 900.
This model features a 30 kWh Blade battery with a promised combined range of 232 km.
BYD SA has also partnered with banking group Absa to provide vehicle finance solutions to BYD customers.
