Industrial and electronic products importer and distributor Actum’s Orbitalum GF saw range, designed for cold cutting and bevelling, is becoming increasingly popular in the food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals, industries for automated applications where hygiene is essential, says Actum CEO Kevin Klaff.

He notes that this saw is the leader in a niche market, as the Orbitalum range “has set new standards” in orbital pipe machining, with its numerous functions combined with ergonomic design to create significant advantages for companies in industrial prefabrications of pipeline systems. The saw has also proven to be effective in the energy plant construction and shipbuilding industries, adds Klaff.

The Orbitalum GF saw creates a precise 90º angled and burr-free cut which is optimally designed to work for automated welding technology. Bevelling of the pipe can also be accommodated by this GF saw range.

The saw uses the planetary cutting method, which characterises the Orbitalum range, with the saw blade rising into the cutting area, and driven orbitally around the tube — hence the name, Orbitalum.

Enhanced safety is achieved from a stationary tube and a rotating tool. This ensures safety as the operator is removed away from the cut and does not have to intervene while cutting. The blade is also designed to chisel the steel out of the pipe. There is no friction generated to melt the steel and so induce cutting. No arcs or sparks are generated while cutting — hence the term cold cutting.

Powerful clamping reduces chatter and allows for a smaller length of pipe to be machined, which is also achieved without deformation of the workpiece.

“There are many industries that could benefit from using this saw in automated welding processes, yet customers are discouraged by the price of the saw. However, when comparing price with optimisation, costs could actually be reduced in many applications when using this saw.”

Users have the option to choose between a manual feed module or an automatic feed module – the former option gives a straight 90º-angle cut while the latter option optimises the cutting result even more, increases the tool life and reduces the operator impact, explains Klaff.

The Orbitalum range is manufactured in Germany and is available exclusively through the Actum group locally.
