Slurry pump scale model receives royal visit
During a visit to the engineering business Weir Group’s Weir Advanced Research Centre (WARC) at the University of Strathclyde’s Technology and Innovation Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, UK monarch Queen Elizabeth was shown a scale model of the Warman slurry pump, says the company.
Warman slurry pumps have been manufactured worldwide since 1938.
Meanwhile, the minerals division of Weir Group is now the global market leader in slurry pumps used for minerals processing – the method through which valuable minerals are extracted from orebodies.
The company’s collaboration with the University of Strathclyde is part of Weir’s commitment to continuously innovate its products – a commitment that includes engineers working with academics from some of the world’s leading technological institutions.
Weir already has similar research relationships with Imperial College London, the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
In addition to the scale model of the Warman slurry pump, the Queen was also shown a scale model of a minerals processing plant and learned of Weir’s global operations, which stretches over more than 70 countries and includes more than 200 manufacturing and service centres, the most recent addition being the range of Trio comminution products for crushing, screening and grinding.
Commenting on the visit, Weir Minerals divisional MD Dean Jenkins says: “It is a great honour to be able to share Weir and Warman’s story with [the Queen] and for her to take such an interest in our firm’s longstanding commitment to developing innovative solutions, aimed at making our customers more productive and maintaining our market leadership.”
