Small-end investment in South Africa’s mineral endowment must be encouraged

It seems as if you can talk until you’re blue in the face about the need to encourage small-end stock exchange investment in South Africa’s minerals endowment but there is no acknowledgement of this from our public sector.

This is so even though small-end investment in climate-critical minerals such as copper, lithium, graphite and others has been enabled in other mining jurisdictions globally. Ironically, however, South Africa’s public sector sees fit to rather give the widest possible latitude to betting and gambling businesses across an ever-extending horizon.

What the public sector refuses to acknowledge is that the major developmental advances of mining jurisdictions such as Canada and Australia have been extensively driven by big and small investment in the minerals endowment of those countries, which do not deprive small-end investors of direct participation in exploration and mining development, and nor should we.
