The sun and the wind can provide competitive energy security

For South Africans, energy security and energy sovereignty are there for the taking because of its superior sun, prime wind, available land, metal endowment, ready-made experience, skills already developed and unfolding of projects. Our own capabilities are already there to convene power, improve the resilience of the local electricity grid, and to drive decarbonisation.

A mixture of on-site solar power, off-site wind power, locally manufactured electricity storage piloting, green hydrogen generation plans, and green hydrogen transport corridors are already deep into feasibility phases. Decarbonisation of global energy and transport systems will be highly minerals and metals intensive, which gives South Africa the chance to offer its metals and minerals.

Mines across South Africa are already generating or planning to generate their own renewable energy, with the more advanced linking that to green hydrogen, which is already helping to power countries such as Germany and Japan. The world we are living in is changing and we are well positioned to deliver into that.
