UK-based Learned Societies the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) have entered an Aerospace Partnership with terms of reference.  The aim of the partnership is to create and execute joint activities that will support the aerospace community and the wider aerospace industry. It will also deepen their collaboration in aerospace engineering initiatives and augment their joint interaction with both government and industry. Further, it will recognise interconnected initiatives across all parties, in support of the sector.

(The RAeS has a South African division, namely the Aeronautical Society of South Africa, while the IET has a memorandum of understanding with the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, and the IMechE has an agreement with the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering.)

“The RAeS welcomes this joined-up approach with IET and IMechE that will consolidate our existing relations with both institutions and provide a mechanism to enhance our collaborative efforts for the benefit of the entire aerospace engineering ecosystem,” highlighted FRAeS Learned Society board chairperson Colin Sirett.

“It makes perfect sense for the aerospace communities from RAeS, IMechE and IET to work closely together,” affirmed IET Aerospace Technical Network vice chairperson Jonathan Watson. “The combined efforts of our communities add value to our IET members, and those working in the aerospace industry and support our shared objectives of raising awareness and bringing public benefit.”

“I am delighted that the cooperation between the IMechE, RAeS and IET within the Aerospace Partnership is being formalised today which will lead to the continued collaboration on learned society events, [science, technology, engineering, mathematics], and a consistency in messaging on aerospace policy and technology to the benefit of our members, the industry, government and the wider public.”

The first event under the banner of the new Aerospace Partnership wil be held next month. It will be a joint webinar on cybersecurity in aviation.
