TNPA commemorates seventieth year of a signature lighthouse on KZN coast
Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) on November 25 celebrated the seventieth anniversary of the Umhlanga Rocks lighthouse, with the State-owned entity first having lit up the structure on November 25, 1954.
TNPA provides, operates and maintains lighthouses and other marine aids to assist vessels with navigation within commercial port limits and along the coast of South Africa.
The Umhlanga Rocks lighthouse, in KwaZulu-Natal, would have been built on the grounds of the Oyster Box Hotel; however, heavy rains eroded the proposed site shortly before construction and a new site was chosen owing to its rock foundation.
The automated 21-m-high cylindrical concrete lighthouse is based 15 km from Durban Central and produces three flashes every 20 seconds using a rotating lens system.
TNPA also maintains and operates the Cape Vidal, Cooper, Durnford, Green Point, Ifafa, Jesser Point, North Sand Bluff, Port Shepstone, Richards Bay and Tugela lighthouses on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
