Two large pure car carriers berth simultaneously at Port of East London
The first simultaneous berthing of two of the world’s largest pure car carriers has taken place at the newly upgraded automotive berth at the Port of East London.
This comes after the upgrade of the port’s automotive berth to allow for the simultaneous berthing of two new-generation pure car carrier vessels larger than 200 m along the West Quay.
The upgrade has doubled the automotive berth’s design capacity to handle 790 000 units a year.
The two vessels, MV Silver Sun, which is about 182.71 m long, and MV Martorell Ace, which is 199.54 m long, docked along the West Quay on April 25, which now has a depth of 10.7 m below the chart datum and a total length of 550 m.
The Transnet National Ports Authority believes the successful berthing of these two car carriers reinforces the Port of East London’s status as a crucial hub for the automotive industry, serving to enable automotive volume recovery and improve operational efficiency.
As part of an ongoing turnaround plan, the Port of East London is collaborating with terminal operators and customers in an effort to provide fit-for-purpose port infrastructure.
