Two sluice gates at Vaal to be closed as water levels start to slowly decline
Two sluice gates at the Vaal dam are set to be closed on Wednesday as the water inflows start to decline.
The Vaal dam water level has decreased from 119.18% on Tuesday to 116.67% by Wednesday morning, as inflows decrease from 1 338.80 cubic metres a second (m³/s) to 1 115.4 m³/s. This is a decrease from the 1 587.34 m3/s recorded on Monday.
In line with this, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) plans to gradually close two sluice gates, one at 10:00 and another at 16:00.
Water levels at the Bloemhof dam, however, remain high at 117.40%, compared with the level of 117.19% on Tuesday, with water releases maintained at 3 600 m³/s.
At Grootdraai dam, which had a water level of 103.24%, one sluice will remain open at two metres.
The Vanderkloof dam, with a water level of 108.63%, and Gariep dam, with a water level of 110.87%, have uncontrolled overflows and are currently spilling.
According to the DWS, some areas along the Lower Orange river in the Northern Cape are cut off as water overtops low lying bridges.
