Ubuntu must be uppermost as South Africa embarks on decarbonisation journey

Showing humanity towards others in fully fledged Ubuntu style is the African way – and we need to display a lot more of it as we move swiftly with the rest of the world to save our planet from climate conflagration.

The generation and storage of wonderful African sunshine and prime African wind is there for the taking. We Africans must fully embrace solar, wind and storage – SWS – the big three letters that will put an end to load-shedding and cut electricity prices.

When we refuse to implement SWS, we throw out the Ubuntu that makes us so special, but where SWS is embraced, Ubuntu is already embraced and must be kept uppermost, so that facing disruption in the move away from fossil fuels are given angel’s wings to fly to higher ground.

Big companies are already committed to going green. In the spirit of Ubuntu, smaller companies needing help should also be enabled. Moreover, the way must be opened to the fullest extent for un-electrified informal settlements to cherish their own solar power, as has taken place in such exemplary fashion at Freedom Farm and Malawi Camp in Cape Town.

Let’s commit to SWS optimally. It provides the cheapest energy, generates the most economic growth, delivers the greatest number of jobs, breaks free from carbon tax, sidesteps carbon border tariffs, and brims with new once-in-a-generation greenness and cleanness.
