The US is supporting South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccine strategy by providing $3-million, or R45-million, in funding for vaccine distribution, field hospitals and data surveillance, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).

United States chargé d'affaires Todd Haskell said on Thursday that the US government was committed to ending the Covid-19 pandemic and to supporting South Africa’s vaccine roll-out strategy.

The US has so far contributed R785-million to assist with South Africa’s Covid-19 strategy.

Haskell said rapid vaccination roll-out in South Africa and the world were critical, especially as new variants are emerging and spreading.

“The US Mission, through our health team, is uniquely positioned to leverage its experience delivering HIV and TB services and its relationships with the South African government and private sector to support smooth vaccine delivery and prevent further transmission,” added Haskell.

USAID will partner with Right to Care to support vaccine delivery and other health services.

Funding will also support a call center to assist and monitor vaccine recipients experiencing side effects and will extend USAID’s support to field hospitals in the Eastern Cape and Free State.

USAID will also provide separate technical assistance for vaccine inventory logistics, supplies and sourcing for syringes and personal protective equipment, and production capacity.
