Automotive manufacturer Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) completed the production of its two-millionth VW Polo – a smoky grey Polo destined for Australia that rolled off the production line at its Plant Kariega, in the Eastern Cape, in November.

Out of the two-million Polos built, 592 840 were made for the local market, while about 1.41-million were produced for export.

This year, Plant Kariega has built 112 386 Polos, including 8 274 Polo GTIs.

This demonstrates VWGA’s contribution to the local automotive market and economy.

Further, since July 2024, Plant Kariega has been the only Volkswagen plant exporting the Polo to Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, reaching more than 30 countries. The Polo was also South Africa’s most exported car in 2024.

The plant started building the Polo in 1996 and produced 5 460 units during the first year. It has been steadily producing Polos since, including four different generations of this model.

“It has been a year of milestones for Plant Kariega, and achieving this one is a very proud moment for the Home of Polo,” says VWGA production director Ulrich Schwabe.

“Contributing to the global success story of the Polo is a privilege for our team, and this is evident in the dedication of our employees, who have made this milestone possible.”
