Water consumption in Gauteng declines
There has been a significant reduction in water use across Gauteng’s metropolitans, the latest data from water utility Rand Water shows.
Combined, the cities of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane are consuming 3 549-million litres of water a day, down from the 3 744-million litres a day recorded last week, but still above the aggregate withdrawal limit of 3 045-million litres of water a day.
The cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane remain above the agreed quotas with Rand Water, while the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has reduced consumption to below its allocation.
The CoE’s consumption, which experienced a surge to 1 053-million litres a day last week, has brought its water consumption down to 996-million litres a day and back below its 1 022-million litres a day consumption agreement.
The City of Johannesburg reduced its consumption to 1 692-million litres a day this week, from the 1 794-million litres of water a day recorded last week, remaining above its target of 1 356-million litres a day.
Water consumption in the City of Tshwane has also reduced, falling to 861-million litres a day from last week’s 897-million litres a day, however, it also remained above the 667-million litres a day withdrawal agreement with Rand Water.
