A video round up of this week’s magazine, highlighting our cover story, features and Business Leader.

ON TRAXX: It’s been a difficult journey, but Transnet last month celebrated a fleet-renewal milestone when the 200th Traxx 23E locomotive rolled off the assembly line. The locomotive is part of 240 such units that Transnet has procured as part of its troubled rail modernisation programme. Following a 2023 settlement agreement with project partner Alstom (which acquired original contractor Bombardier), Transnet Engineering initiated a 24/5 shift pattern to ramp up production. The project achieved its best-ever performance in 2024, delivering 43 locomotives in a single year and is now said to be on track for completing the delivery of the remaining 40 locomotives by June 2026.

CONFIDENCE BOOST: The success of the G20 against the backdrop of well-founded scepticism about whether a decaying Johannesburg could pull off its host-city status was not only a relief but also a confidence booster. Put together with the impressive performances of our national cricket, football and rugby teams, 2025 is ending with something of a bang rather than the whimpers that have characterised far too many recent years.
