Alstom appoints new CEO for Bombela Maintenance Company

Alstom Southern Africa has appointed Shumani Madanda as the new CEO of the Bombela Maintenance Company (BMC).  

In his new role, Madanda will be responsible for strategy and operations, while he will also lead the BMC team as they explore growth opportunities for the company.

Madanda has more than 20 years’ experience in railway engineering.

He started his career at Transnet Freight Rail and later joined the Gautrain team during the construction phase. 

His academic credentials include a BSc in electronic engineering and a master’s degree in engineering management, among others.

“I am excited to lead a competent and capable multidisciplinary team at BMC,” says Madanda.

Bombela is a special purpose company that looks after the Gautrain rapid-rail system. 

The scope of work includes the maintenance of the core railway system, with the following sub-systems: 96 Electrostar cars, 153 km of track, the cityflo 250 signalling system, six 25 kV substations, 21 km of conductor rail for the tunnel section, and 135 km of catenary wire system. 

For the aboveground sections, BMC’s responsibility includes the automatic fare collection systems; the communication systems that incorporates radio, CCTV, fibre, telephone, PIS, SCADA and PAVA; and the maintenance of way and workshop equipment.

Alstom is the majority shareholder in BMC.
